Nearly half of young "Gen Z" Canadians are trying to limit social media use to improve their mental health, according to a report by Mintel Marketing Intelligence.

The December report said 47 percent of Canadians born between 2005 and 2009 think heavy use of technology will negatively impact their mental health.

Older Gen Z's and Millennials are also concerned about their mental health.

In March, the majority (61%) of 18-to-24-year-olds said their mental health declined in the past two years.

Canadians under the age of 35 were most likely (17%) to have considered suicide or self-hurt in the past year, according to a July report. They reported the highest level of being depressed and hopeless almost every day for a couple weeks in the past year (35%).

Four-in-ten under the age of 34 said anxiety and depression was a major problem in their social circle.
